Another academic year has begun; another summer gone!
I cannot help but think that the ideological issues surrounding orphanhood, vulnerability and adoption must be faced more squarely than ever before…..It is clear to me that the number of children affected by social orphanhood is absolutely huge–far larger in scope and scale than many global issues that receive far more attention. As to the limitations of international law in this respect, more anon.
Every day there are many reminders of just how many children we are talking about. A sea change in our thinking about these children is urgently required, and all too slow in coming. In South Africa alone, they are talking about two million children in need of family structure by 2010!
